Common Factors that Affect Van Insurance Costs
You’ve probably noticed that there normally isn’t much written about vans. If you are a van
owner you probably have been looking around for the right information regarding van insurance but still have difficulty finding it. It is simply
the case that most people aren’t too worried about their van insurance. They just pay the premiums and hope that nothing happens.
For those that are interested, vans can be divided into two different types; vans used for
private purposes and those that are used for business purposes. As with any insurance product there are many factors that determine the
price of the policy. I have listed the main factors that contribute to the price of the premiums below. Some will warrant some explanation which
I will do later.
- The type of van and the value
- The brand, make and model of the van,
- Your age and the number of years you’ve been driving;
- Where you live and where you work;
- The number of vans that you want to cover in the insurance policy;
- The weight of the van;
- The security features available on the standard model of your van.
- Additional security features that you have installed;
- Your previous drivers history, claims history and criminal record;
- What the main purpose of the van is;
- Which drivers are named and;
- The excess fee that you agree with.
An important thing to realize here is that as with car insurance policies you can have so many options in your policy that it will most probably
serve more to confuse you. The best can insurance policy is one that is made for your specialized needs and not one that is the cheapest. Most of
the time people use vans for specialized purposes unlike cars which are generally used for ferrying passengers and getting groceries. It is the
wide range of functions that a van can have that makes insuring them more difficult compared to cars. The rude awakening to this is when most
owners make a claim for some damage that they might not be covered in that situation because of a coverage shortcoming.
Most of the time vans are used for business rather than for pleasure. This is where many
business owners make the mistake of insuring their work vans privately. If your van is involved in an accident when it is in the process of
serving your business then you will find that many insurance companies will try to worm their way out of paying for the claims. They will argue
that this is what the business insurance is for and it doesn’t matter that you didn’t add your van in your business insurance, the lack of
foresight was your problem.
As you can imagine, this is a terrible situation, your private insurance for your van might be
rendered totally useless because you are using your van for business purposes. What business owners should be doing by declaring their van as a
part of their business and actually insuring it as a part of the business. For the most part the premiums will be slightly higher as you would
have an insurance policy that properly reflects the use of your van. The extra you pay now is still a much better option than having a cheaper
private van insurance policy that you won’t be able to claim from when you are in trouble.
When declaring your van as a part of your business and subsequently getting van insurance for
it through your business you must be totally forthcoming with the information you provide. You must be truthful with the insurance company about
what you will be transporting, how often and at what loads. You must also be totally honest about how hazardous the material is and also who the
named drivers are.
It is also highly advantageous to insure against loss of business. You have to estimate how
much money you will lose if your van is not in service then insure against that. This way, you will not have to deal with the loss of business
when your van is not operational. You should also take into account of the loss of tools or machinery that you carry in your van if it is
stolen.
These are all things that you must consider when insuring your van. If you are a van owner then
you must understand that insuring a van is sometimes much more complicated than insuring a normal car. Extra research has to be conducted and you
might even have to get help from an insurance agent to steer you the right way.
